Practice Focus
Jason is both a lawyer and a chartered accountant and is the leader of the firm's tax practice. Specifically, Jason assists individuals and businesses and their advisors with the following:
- income tax planning for private businesses and individuals
- corporate reorganizations
- purchases and sales of assets and businesses
- partnership structuring and formation
- trust structuring and settlement
- farm property successions or sales
- dispute resolution with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
Jason values his ability to build relationships of trust and confidence with clients and their accounting, insurance and other legal advisers by providing high quality tax services at a reasonable price and in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Jason graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary in 2002 where he received numerous academic awards including the William A. McGillivray Gold Medal in Law for achieving the highest academic standing in his graduating class, the Felesky Flynn Prize in Taxation and the Stikeman Elliott/Carswell Prize in Taxation Law for highest achievement in tax law courses, and the Donald P. McLaws Prize for highest aggregate standing in corporate and commercial law courses.
Prior to returning to his home town of Red Deer to join Warren Sinclair, Jason articled at a national law firm and thereafter practiced several years covering a broad spectrum of taxation law matters at a well known tax boutique in Calgary. In addition, Jason previously was employed at an international accounting firm during which time he was admitted as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta.
Jason also graduated from the Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary in 1997 (with distinction). In connection with earning his Bachelor of Commerce degree, Jason attended Red Deer College for two years where he was awarded the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference 'Academic - Athletic Award' for academic and athletic achievement and the Central Alberta Chartered Accountants' Association Scholarship for the highest academic standing in accounting courses.
Jason has authored papers for and made presentations at the Annual and Prairie Province tax conferences of the Canadian Tax Foundation. Jason also has authored a number of newspaper articles, copies of which are provided on his weblog, commenting on various tax planning opportunities for businesses and their owners.
In addition, he has lectured on tax matters on behalf of numerous professional groups including the Institute of Charted Accountants of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association.
Professional Associations and Other Activities
Jason is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, Institute of Charted Accountants of Alberta, Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Canadian Tax Foundation, Central Alberta Bar Association, and was formerly the chair of a tax section of the Canadian Bar Association.
Jason enjoys jogging, hiking and camping in the mountains, sailing with the Central Alberta Sailing Club, and spending time with his wife and their two sons and daughter.
